“I Need Healing!” - Ozone Layer
An online report from the United Nations has recently come out with incredible news: the ozone layer is healing up. The holes have become smaller and smaller since 2000. They are expected to become completely gone by the 2060s, but in some parts of the earth, by 2030. In 1987, an agreement called the Montreal Protocol was made to remove certain chemicals that could harm the ozone layer. It was created by the Canadian government and later confirmed by the U.S government in 1988. According to the U.S. Department of State, the removal of the chemicals in the ozone layer is expected to avoid “more than 280 million cases of skin cancer, approximately 1.6 million skin cancer deaths, and more than 45 million cases of cataracts in the United States alone by the end of the century.” The Montreal Protocol has affected all countries of the world, especially now that it has been proven to be successful.
Neo-Nazi vs Film Director: The Ultimate Interview
Deeyah Khan met with Neo-Nazi to see their reactions and feelings towards her religion (Muslim). Although Khan was used to getting persecuted because of her beliefs, she wanted to see if it’s possible for the people to “hate in-person”. For her first interview, Khan met with the US National Socialist Movement leader. As she was heading to the interview center she got anxious about the interview, but continued to walk to the address she was given. Khan had thoughts such as, “What if he’s armed? What if he’s bringing people with him?” Once they started talking, however, Khan’s perception changed completely. After talking about many things like life, family, and politics, she left realizing that people don’t hate in person. Khan stated, “I found it to be liberating, because on a personal level—for me—I left that room… no longer being afraid.” She also wanted to understand people’s drives and thoughts, so that they can be better at understanding and neutralising them.
Neymar and The Handicap School
Brazilian football player (soccer), Neymar Jr., has been promoting the “world’s biggest inclusive school” for handicapped children. Neymar partnered with the Handicap International to launch the online school program, “Teacher Kids”. This program allows children to post videos of themselves teaching special skills. Neymar said, “32 million disabled kids don’t have access to school, yet they have so much to teach us.” He was the school’s first student to learn the lessons: he got a lesson about how to relax from a boy with down syndrome, how to create an origami heart from a visually impaired girl and how to dance from a young amputee.
